Chained to a Tree in the Freezing New York Woods, a Terrified Dog Barked Until a Passing Walker Heard Him

On the first day of December, a white pit bull mix stood tethered to a tree in the woods of Amsterdam, New York, held in place by a short metal chain as freezing temperatures settled over the area. Hidden among the trees beside a quiet bike path, the dog had no shelter from the bitter cold and no way to pull himself free.

A local man who was out walking his own dog happened to catch the sound of barking coming from the treeline and stepped off the path to investigate. When he found the stranded dog and stepped closer, the pit bull lowered himself into a fearful crouch, barking and growling from the end of his short chain as he braced against the approach of a stranger.

Knowing the dog would not survive long in the severe weather, the walker contacted the Amsterdam Police Department for immediate help. Soon after, officers made their way into the woods carrying a pair of heavy bolt cutters, stepping carefully toward the trembling, defensive dog to sever the metal links keeping him trapped against the tree.

A Bark Through the Trees and a Pair of Bolt Cutters

Had the woods remained quiet for just a little longer, no one might have known the white pit bull mix was back there at all. The short chain left him barely enough room to pace, forcing him to stand exposed to the December air until his barking finally carried far enough to reach the bike path.

Even as help arrived, the dog’s posture showed how overwhelmed he was by his surroundings.

Caught between the freezing cold and his fear of why he had been left behind, he continued to crouch low and vocalize as the officers moved in. Rather than backing away from his guarded reaction, the responding police focused on getting him out of the elements as quickly and safely as possible.

“Had the man not seen him, the dog would have frozen to death,” authorities shared after the rescue.

With a quick snap of the bolt cutters, the heavy chain fell away from the tree.

Once freed from the woods, the dog was guided out of the cold and transported by officers directly to a nearby SPCA, where he could finally warm up and receive proper care in a safe indoor space.

“Sometimes the difference between an animal being forgotten in the cold and finding safety is simply one person who chooses to stop and listen.”

A Search for Answers in Amsterdam

Following the rescue by the bike path, the Amsterdam Police Department opened an investigation to find out who had walked the dog into the woods and left him chained in freezing conditions. Under state law, the person or people responsible face felony charges for abandoning him in the cold.

To help move the search forward, the New York State Humane Society stepped in to offer a $1,000 reward for “any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible” for leaving the dog behind.

For local authorities, the close call near the bike path served as a stark reminder of how quickly winter weather can turn fatal for a tethered animal.

“Anyone seeing a dog tied outside in bad weather, especially in an area it shouldn’t be, should contact their local police department immediately,” the police department emphasized.

Another Abandoned Dog Who Chose to Trust Again

The rescue in the New York woods came just two weeks after another pit bull mix across the country survived an equally harrowing ordeal—offering a quiet glimpse into how resilient these dogs can be once they reach gentle hands.

In Everett, Washington, a female dog named Binny had been found discarded inside a dumpster under circumstances that stunned local responders.

“There was rope around her, she was tied into a suitcase, and that suitcase had been dumped into a dumpster,” Everett Police Officer CJ Hawley told KOMO News, noting that the luggage had been zipped completely shut.

When rescuers first opened the suitcase and lifted Binny out, she was in fragile condition, suffering from neck abrasions, vomiting blood, and showing signs of having recently given birth to puppies.

Yet once she was brought into the care of the local shelter, the fear and physical trauma of being trapped in the dark did not harden her spirit. Within weeks of receiving medical attention and steady meals, the dog who had been tied inside a piece of luggage was seen running happily across the shelter floor, wagging her tail with an open, relaxed expression on her face.

Leslie Wall, assistant manager at the shelter, noted how quickly Binny chose to embrace the people caring for her.

“She’s a great dog because she meets new people with excitement and enjoyment,” Wall shared. “Which is something we don’t see a lot of times with dogs that have had this kind of history.”

Whether recovering in a Washington shelter or warming up inside a New York SPCA after being cut free from a frozen tree, both dogs now stand far removed from the places where they were left behind, surrounded at last by people determined to keep them safe.

“Even after the coldest betrayal, a dog given warmth and patience will often let go of its fear long before the people around it forget what it survived.”
