The weather in County Roscommon had been harsh, marked by heavy rainfall and plunging temperatures. Out in an isolated field near Elphin, an unbelievable discovery was made. A young lurcher, only about two years old, was found chained heavily to a metal gate, completely exposed to the unforgiving elements.
She was freezing, hungry, and entirely stripped of her ability to seek shelter. Yet, even while immobilized by the heavy tether, she had not given up on the six newborn puppies huddled against her paws. She was desperately trying to nurse them in the dirt, absorbing the biting cold to keep their fragile bodies warm.
When a kind-hearted passerby finally spotted the stranded family, the mother dog could offer little more than an exhausted, pleading look. As local police and rescue workers hurried to unfasten her from the gate, she remained entirely still, allowing the strangers to gather up the tiny lives she had fought so hard to protect. But after enduring such severe exposure in the middle of nowhere, it was unclear what toll the freezing weather had already taken on her and her vulnerable newborns.

Escaping the Open Field
The entire family was urgently transported to the ISPCA National Animal Centre in Longford. The immediate priority was getting them out of the cold, drying them off, and stabilizing their temperatures.
The mother dog, who was soon named Emmy Lou, was utterly depleted. She had spent an unknown amount of time trapped in that field, unable to find a single drop of water or scrap of food. Her entire existence had been narrowed down to keeping her babies alive while waiting for help that might never come.
ISPCA Centre Manager Hugh O’Toole expressed his absolute disbelief that anyone could intentionally leave a two-year-old nursing dog tied up without any form of shelter. He noted that given the recent severe rainfall and harsh conditions, the outcome for the family could have easily been fatal had they not been found exactly when they were.

A Quiet Place to Rest
Once safely inside the clinic, a thorough veterinary assessment brought a massive wave of relief to the rescue team. Despite being shivering, deeply hungry, and exhausted from her ordeal, Emmy Lou and her six babies did not appear to have any serious underlying health issues.
The cold dirt and heavy chain were finally replaced by thick blankets and constant meals.
The medical team scanned Emmy Lou for a microchip in hopes of tracing whoever had abandoned her to the elements, but found nothing. The lack of identification meant her past would remain a mystery, but her future was no longer in question.
She didn’t have to act as a shield against the rain anymore.
With the quiet hum of the clinic around her, Emmy Lou could simply lie back, rest her weary head, and comfortably nurse her six growing puppies—Billy Ray, Dixie, Dolly, Dotty, June, and Patsy.
The young mother’s anxious vigilance has slowly softened into the calm routine of a dog who finally knows her family is safe. They will spend the remainder of the year resting securely indoors under the watchful eyes of their caretakers, waiting for the day the puppies are old enough to step into new, responsible homes.
