As they made their way down the quiet dirt trail, they spotted an unexpected shape moving through the brush ahead.

It was a senior dog, wandering completely alone in the wilderness. Without a collar or an owner in sight, her slow, uncertain steps suggested she had been lost for quite some time. The vast, unfamiliar environment could have easily terrified an older animal, yet she didn’t bark, panic, or attempt to run away.

Knowing she needed assistance, Matt carefully walked ahead of his family to assess the situation. The moment the weary dog saw him approach, she didn’t hesitate. She immediately turned and trotted directly toward him, looking up with a gentle, eager expression that seemed to silently ask for help.

Finding Comfort Among Strangers

Matt reached down and gently scooped the senior dog into his arms. She offered absolutely no resistance, simply relaxing into his hold as he carried her back to where Grace and the rest of the family were waiting.

The group slowly hiked to a nearby park, finding a quiet patch of shade where they could sit down and determine their next move. The sweet, older dog settled into the grass right beside the couple’s own two rescue dogs, Foxi and Nemo.

A Timely Reunion

Grace immediately contacted the Bella Vista Animal Shelter, and the staff agreed to come out to the park to collect the dog. As she was gently loaded into the rescue vehicle, Matt and Grace said their goodbyes, crossing their fingers that the sweet senior already had a family desperately looking for her.

Their intuition was entirely correct.

The shelter quickly posted a photo of the newly arrived dog on their social media page. Within a short time, a worried woman saw the update and rushed to the facility to claim her.

The rescue staff learned that the dog’s name was Lola. She had accidentally slipped away during an evening walk several days earlier, and her family had been frantically searching the surrounding area ever since, fearing the worst as the days dragged on.

Thanks to a couple’s willingness to alter their afternoon hiking plans, Lola was spared from another lonely, dangerous night in the woods. She is now back in the familiar comforts of her own house, surrounded by the people who love her.
