Out in a South Lubbock cornfield, a small, nearly unrecognizable figure was found struggling beneath the weight of severe, long-term neglect. Taken in by the South Plains SPCA, the little dog—soon named Matt because of the condition of his coat—represented the most extreme case of neglect the organization had ever encountered.
Years of untended hair had locked together into a dense, heavy shell that hid his face and frame almost completely from view. Tangled deep within that thick coat were sharp goathead stickers, living beetles, and even an entire leash that had been swallowed up by the matted fur over time.
At first, members of the rescue team hoped they might be able to work through the coat themselves to reach the dog underneath, only to realize the mass was far too tight and painful to remove while he was awake. Reaching out to a trusted groomer and their veterinary partners, they prepared to sedate him so they could finally uncover the small animal trapped beneath the weight.

An Hour of Careful Work Under Sedation
When Matt first arrived, the matting was so thick and solid that the rescuers could hardly tell where the tangled coat ended and his body began. Kim Moyers, President of the South Plains SPCA, knew right away that ordinary grooming wouldn’t be enough to safely free him.
Instead of forcing him through the stress and discomfort of being handled while conscious, the team reached out to Kayla Thurman, a groomer who also serves as one of the organization’s foster caregivers, along with their partner veterinary clinic.
“We thought we could find the puppy under there but we weren’t able to so we reached out to Kayla Thurman who is one of our fosters also, and she’s a groomer and our hospital for pets,” Moyers shared.
Once Matt was safely sedated at the clinic, the team spent a full hour working layer by layer through the hardened coat.
As the clippers moved through years of accumulated filth, the sheer physical burden the little dog had been carrying became clear. By the time the shaving was finished, the team had removed three full pounds of matted hair from a dog who weighed only fourteen pounds in total.
For a dog of his size, simply standing or taking a step through the cornfield had meant dragging nearly a quarter of his own body weight in tangled debris, burrs, and an old leash he could never shake loose.
With the heavy shell finally lifted away, the caregivers moved on to the smaller, painstaking details of his care. They spent time carefully picking embedded goathead stickers from his skin, trimming back his overgrown nails, and cleaning out his ears until he could rest comfortably without irritation.
“They sedated him for us and shaved him down and we picked stickers off and cut his nails and cleaned his ears and found the little precious dog that he is.”

Discovering the Six-Year-Old Dog Underneath
When the last of the matted hair was swept away and the sedation began to wear off, the team realized that the dog they had initially referred to as a puppy was actually much older. Veterinarians examining Matt estimated him to be around six years old—an adult dog who had quietly endured season after season of neglect before anyone noticed him in the field.
The difference between the unrecognizable mass brought in from the cornfield and the small dog resting on the exam table left a deep impression on everyone involved in his care, as well as the local community following his story.
Tori Houston, a volunteer and foster mom with the South Plains SPCA, was struck by how completely the heavy coat had hidden him from the world.
“This one has really been a hit with the community, and I’m sure it has never seen this extreme,” Houston said. “I would have never thought underneath all of that hair, that this beautiful, gorgeous-looking dog would be under all of that.”
“Sometimes the hardest part of an animal’s past is not just the weight it was forced to carry, but how long it remained invisible while carrying it.”

A Quiet Place to Heal in Experienced Hands
Although losing three pounds of matted fur brought immediate physical relief, six years of neglect could not be undone in a single afternoon at the veterinary clinic. Left weakened by his ordeal in the cornfield, Matt still faced a long path to full recovery before he would be ready to look for a permanent home.
To give him the steady environment he needed, he moved into the care of Tori Houston, whose home was already well-equipped for dogs recovering from difficult pasts.
Over the course of five years, Houston had fostered more than five hundred dogs, giving her the quiet patience required to guide an animal through the slow transition from survival to comfort.

In her home, Matt no longer has to contend with sharp field burrs, insects, or the pull of an old leash tangled against his skin. Surrounded by experienced care, he is spending his days healing and regaining his strength until he is fully vetted and ready to be placed up for adoption.
“Freedom for a neglected animal often begins with the simple relief of being able to move without carrying the weight of yesterday.”
