Running Desperately Behind a Moving Van in the Spanish Countryside, a Tiny Stray Refused to Be Left Behind

While driving their camper van through a quiet stretch of the Spanish countryside near Moclín in the province of Granada, Martina Russo and her partner, Fil, caught sight of a tiny shape moving in their mirrors. A small, scruffy Shih Tzu and Yorkie mix—whom they later named Moxie—had appeared on the empty road and was sprinting directly behind their vehicle.

At first glance, the couple assumed the little dog belonged to a nearby home and was simply chasing their tires as a passing game. Yet as the van continued down the isolated road with no houses or people in sight, the nature of her run became unmistakably clear; pushing her short legs as hard as she could, she was growing increasingly distressed as she tried to keep them from driving away.

Realizing the exhausted dog was begging them to stop in the middle of nowhere, Martina and Fil pulled over to the edge of the road to offer her some water. The moment they opened the door, the tiny dog gladly hopped straight inside the van, leaving the couple waiting to see if an owner would appear along the quiet country lane.

Knocking on Doors Along the Granada Roads

Once the little dog was safely out of the road and drinking water inside the van, Martina and Fil set out to find where she belonged. Although they traveled regularly in their camper, they rarely encountered stray dogs on their routes, and it seemed difficult to believe such a small companion could be out in the countryside entirely on her own.

The couple drove through the surrounding area, stopping at every house they could find to ask residents if anyone recognized her.

No one in the neighborhood had ever seen the tiny dog before.

Still hoping a worried family might be searching for her, Martina and Fil shared posts online and eventually drove right back to the exact spot near Moclín where she had first started chasing their van. They set her down on the ground to see if she would follow a familiar scent or run back toward a home hidden in the hills.

Instead of wandering off, the little dog stayed pressed close to their feet, looking up at them and making it clear she had no intention of going anywhere without them.

“Sometimes an abandoned animal does not wait to be chosen; she simply decides who she belongs with and refuses to let them drive away.”

What the Veterinary Exam Revealed the Next Morning

With nowhere else for the dog to go that evening, Martina and Fil kept her safe inside their van for the night and brought her to a local veterinary clinic the following day. They hoped a quick scan might reveal a microchip with an owner’s contact information, but the examination told a very different story.

“We took her to the vet the next day, and turns out she was not chipped, not spayed, female, about one-year-old, fur very overgrown and full of gunk around the eyes,” Martina said.

The condition of her coat and eyes showed she had been neglected and fending for herself for quite some time before spotting their van on the road.

With no microchip on file and no one coming forward to claim her, the couple realized that nobody was looking for the one-year-old dog.

Having watched how quickly she had trusted them from the moment she hopped through their door, Martina and Fil decided her search for a home was over. They officially adopted her and named her Moxie—a fitting name for a tiny stray who had chased down a moving vehicle to change her own life.

Short Legs on Mountain Trails and a Van Full of Friends

Stepping into Martina and Fil’s life meant adapting to a home on wheels that was already shared with the couple’s resident cats. Rather than feeling cautious around her new feline housemates, Moxie settled into the small space as if she had lived there all along.

Today, she travels alongside the couple and their cats as they drive across Europe, trading the lonely road outside Moclín for a life of constant companionship.

“She’s very sweet and funny, very playful, loves our cats — to be fair, she loves everything and everyone! (especially cats and kids). We love taking her on adventures, and she makes us laugh every day,” Martina shared.

Despite her small frame and short legs, Moxie has proven to be an tireless hiking companion.

Whether walking through new towns or climbing steep mountain trails, she easily keeps pace with Martina and Fil, always staying close by their sides just as she did on the afternoon they first met. The desperate sprint down an empty Spanish road is now far behind her, replaced by open trails and a family that never leaves her behind.

“Home is not always a fixed address; for a dog once left on an empty road, it is simply the place where the people she loves always wait for her to keep up.”
