Thrown Out Into Busy Traffic Under a Tangled Coat of Fur, a 75-Pound Dog Named Benji Spent Hours Searching the Streets for the Family That Left Him

While driving through Orange County, California, volunteer dog rescuer Mary Nakiso caught sight of a large, shaggy figure cowering alone at the edge of the street. The solitary dog—later named Benji—weighed a full 75 pounds and was weighed down by a thick, neglected coat that had twisted into heavy cords.

Despite his imposing size, Benji was completely petrified. Only minutes earlier, he had been thrown out on the roadside by his own family, leaving him so disoriented that he began running in frantic circles right in the middle of moving traffic.

With a sinking feeling in her stomach, Nakiso slammed on her brakes and stepped out to approach the frightened giant, hoping to guide him off the pavement before the busy road hurt him. Yet before she could secure him, the panicked dog bolted away from the curb to keep searching for the people who had left him—vanishing into the surrounding streets before help could take hold.

A Frantic Search Across the Pavement

For a dog who had spent his life belonging to a household, being suddenly left behind on a noisy street was impossible to understand. Benji had no idea where his family had gone, only that they were no longer beside him.

In those first chaotic minutes after being left behind, his confusion nearly cost him his life.

“When he first got thrown out, he was so confused [and] running in circles in traffic,” wrote Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29. “A huge jeep with huge tires literally went over him …”

Even after surviving that close call on the asphalt, Benji kept roaming the busy streets in a frantic search, dodging cars as he tried to find his way back home.

“He is literally 75 pounds and so big but so scared,” Hall shared.

When Benji slipped out of sight, Nakiso immediately called Hall to alert her, and the two women began closely monitoring local social media groups for any sign of where the big dog had gone.

“Even when an animal is left behind in the middle of danger, their first instinct is rarely to run toward safety—it is almost always to look for the familiar faces that walked away.”

Waiting for a Frightened Heart to Slow Down

Hours passed with Benji out on his own until a neighborhood resident finally posted an update online: a giant, heavily matted dog had just been spotted wandering nearby.

Because heavy California traffic kept Hall from reaching the neighborhood quickly enough on her own, she immediately reached out to three trusted volunteer friends who lived closer to the area.

Without a moment of hesitation, Nuñez Aky, Yamileth, and Karla agreed to head out and look for him.

“I sent a message to Nuñez Aky, Yamileth and Karla,” Hall wrote. “When they got there, he was running back and forth so fast. So they waited for him to settle down.”

Rushing toward a panicked, 75-pound dog would have easily sent him sprinting back into oncoming traffic. Instead, the three women stayed calm and gave Benji the time he needed to catch his breath and slow his frantic pacing.

While Hall stayed glued to her phone waiting for news, the volunteers on the ground quietly worked together to guide the flighty dog away from the open road.

Rather than trying to grab him on the sidewalk, they carefully steered him toward an enclosed yard—and pulled the gate shut behind him.

For the first time all day, Benji was no longer running for his life.

“[B]ecause they are so amazing, they got him into a yard and shut the gate,” Hall wrote. “My heart was so happy. The fear and terror he had been through was over, and this big hunk of pure love was finally safe.”

Once the gate clicked shut, the terrified energy that had kept Benji bolting down the streets finally gave way. As the volunteers stepped in to shower him with gentle praise and affection, the massive stray didn’t show a trace of defensiveness, allowing his rescuers to lift all 75 pounds of him into their car.

Leaving the Heavy Layers Behind at Camino Pet Hospital

From the neighborhood yard, the volunteers drove Benji straight to Camino Pet Hospital to receive the medical attention and physical relief he desperately needed.

While his brush with traffic had been a sudden crisis, the state of his coat told the story of a much longer stretch of neglect. His fur had grown so dense and tangled over time that it hung from his frame in heavy, ropelike clumps.

At the hospital, the staff carefully went to work freeing him from the weight.

“All the layers of his past [have] been shaved away,” Hall shared in an update. “He literally had dreadlocks.”

Beneath the heavy, matted coat and the panic of the busy street, Benji’s true temperament quickly came to light.

Far from the frightened giant who had been cowering by the curb that morning, the newly groomed dog greeted his caregivers with a gentle, open warmth that won over everyone at the clinic.

“Benji is the sweetest, most loving dog I have ever met,” Hall told The Dodo.

Since arriving at Camino Pet Hospital, Benji has been neutered and is spending a few quiet days resting and healing under attentive care. By next week, he will be ready to leave the clinic behind and step into the home of his new foster family—trading the confusion of the streets for a place where he will never have to search for his people again.

“Shaving away a neglected coat lightens an animal’s body, but it takes a circle of patient hands to show him that he never has to run in fear again.”
