When animal control officer Desiree Sage arrived on the scene, she slowly approached the dirt-covered, helpless dog, bracing herself for how a severely traumatized animal might react to a stranger’s touch.

“Very upsetting to see her sitting in the dirt… she had flies around her ears, sitting there helpless,” Sage recalled of those first crucial moments.
Despite the unimaginable pain she was in, Bella did not fight the hands that finally came to help her. Within forty-five minutes of the initial call, law enforcement and animal control officers had carefully secured her and rushed her to urgent veterinary care.

According to the shelter staff, the physical loss hasn’t slowed her down at all. She emerged from the medical ward happy and remarkably free-spirited, quickly capturing the hearts of the community. A small, dedicated fan club even formed, sending her soft blankets and special treats to make up for the comforts she had been denied.
“Her personality is still so loving, even though she came in here starving, abandoned, and neglected,” shared Bonnie Kanicki, the director of the local animal care facility.

Currently, Bella’s journey to adoption is on hold while an active investigation into her severe abuse continues.
She remains under the protective care of the shelter, shielded from the cruel world that once abandoned her. While she waits for a specialized foster placement and the eventual justice she deserves, she is finally experiencing what it means to be cherished.
“We found her unloved, and now she’s loved,” Kanicki noted.
