While patrolling a dangerous stretch of road in Northeast Houston, a volunteer with the nonprofit organization Corridor Rescue spotted a tiny tan puppy walking alone along the pavement. Despite being visibly unwell and far too thin, the little dog—thought to be a young pit bull—held his head high, gripped tightly in his mouth was a damp, folded newspaper that he carried like a prized treasure.
Rather than hiding in the shadows or cowering from passing cars, the puppy trotted jauntily down the street, eager to show off the only makeshift toy he had ever known. Yet beneath his cheerful posture, his small frame bore the unmistakable signs of severe neglect and the harsh reality of surviving on his own.
As the volunteer stepped closer and recorded a quick moment of his proud walk, the puppy trotted right up to greet them, still clinging to his tattered paper. Setting the soggy bundle aside on the pavement, the volunteer gently scooped the little dog into their arms and carried him toward the safety of a waiting vehicle, unsure just how much medical help his fragile body was going to need.

What Lay Beneath His Cheerful Walk
The rescue team named the little puppy Bingo and brought him straight for a full veterinary evaluation before settling him into the Corridor Rescue kennel facility in Magnolia, Texas. Although he had greeted his rescuer on the street with upbeat energy, the exam quickly revealed how close he had come to running out of time.
At the time of his rescue, Bingo weighed a mere 11 pounds, with a swollen belly full of intestinal parasites.
“Although he was actively walking the streets with his newspaper, his initial exam determined that he was severely dehydrated, parvo positive, filled with intestinal parasites, and suffering from sarcoptic mange at the time of his rescue,”a Corridor Rescue worker explained.
Constant scratching from the mites had also left him with a secondary bacterial infection across his irritated skin. Fortunately, his case of canine parvovirus had been caught while still relatively mild, giving the medical team a clear window to help him fight back.
“He required flea and heartworm prevention, fluids, dewormer, antibiotics, and medicated baths for mange, as well as supportive care and treatment for the parvo virus,” the worker added.

Trading Soggy Paper for Real Toys
When Bingo first arrived at the shelter in Magnolia, the sudden change in surroundings left him feeling timid and a little scared. Without the familiar street or the damp paper he had carried for comfort, he needed time to understand that he was safe.
Page Moore, president of Corridor Rescue, made sure the little dog didn’t have to miss his makeshift treasure for long.
“The newspaper was soggy and smelly,” Moore said. “He was given plenty of new toys to enjoy.”
“Even in the hardest circumstances, a young dog’s desire to play is often the last thing to fade and the first thing to return.”
As the fluids, antibiotics, and soothing medicated baths began to clear his skin and restore his strength, the quiet hesitation from his first days in the kennel melted away. The cheerful spirit that had carried him down the streets of Houston returned in full force.
“He became a spunky little fella!” Moore shared. “Bold in spirit and eager for company, young Bingo was as bright and vibrant as a puppy can get! He loved interacting with staff and volunteers and enjoyed all his toys.”
Within his first month of attentive care, Bingo’s small body began to fill out, gaining eight healthy pounds as his coat healed. Once he officially tested negative for parvovirus twice and cleared two consecutive skin scrapes, he was neutered and cleared to begin looking for a permanent home.

From Texas Streets to Chasing Hockey Pucks
It took only three months from the day he was lifted off the pavement for Bingo’s story to reach the right family. Hundreds of miles away from the heat of Houston, a mother in Minnesota came across his adoption listing and knew right away that he belonged with them.
“His mom saw his listing for adoption and filled out an application with us,” Moore said. “She fell in love and Chance left Texas on August 2 to live in Saint Paul, Minnesota, with three kids and mom!”

Renamed Chance by his new family, the puppy who once wandered a busy road alone settled effortlessly into a lively house filled with children.
“Our adoption coordinator keeps in contact with all of our adopters. Bingo’s adopter reports that he is adjusting so well to his home, he sleeps through the night, and is already the best companion,” a member of the Corridor Rescue team shared.
While he now has a basket full of real dog toys and a soft bed to sleep in every night, Chance has also discovered a new favorite pastime that fits right in with his Minnesota home.

“We are a hockey family,” his new mom wrote in an update to the rescue. “Of course, we had to introduce him to the game. He loves chasing pucks around.”
“Sometimes all it takes for a stray to trade a damp newspaper on the street for a home full of laughter is one person who stops to notice him.”
